Positive reinforcement-based training (PRBT) techniques are a highly effective and humane way to train animals. Rather than punishing unwanted behaviors, these techniques focus on rewarding desired behaviors, which can help to encourage animals to repeat these behaviors in the future. In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of using PRBT techniques with animals.
Benefits of positive reinforcement-based training ā¦
1. Improves behavior
PRBT techniques have been shown to be highly effective in improving animal behavior. By rewarding your desired behaviors, animals learn to associate these behaviors with their desired outcomes, which motivates them to perform these behaviors in the future.
For example, if you reward your dog with a treat every time they sit on command, they will be more likely to sit on command in the future.
2. Creates a Stronger Bond
Using PRBT techniques can help to strengthen the bond between animals and their caretakers. By rewarding desired behaviors, animals learn to trust and feel more comfortable around their owners, which can help to improve their overall well-being. This can be particularly important for animals who have experienced trauma or neglect in the past.
3. Improves Communication
PRBT techniques can help to improve communication between animals and their owners. By rewarding desired behaviors, animals not only learn to understand what their owners are asking of them, but they have an increased motivation to understand so they can obtain the reward they learned to expect. This can be particularly important for animals who have difficulty understanding verbal commands.
4. Humane & Effective
PRBT techniques are a more humane alternative to physically aversive methods. By rewarding desired behaviors, animals learn to associate you and your commands with positive consequences, rather than simply learning to avoid negative consequences. This approach is especially effective with animals that are sensitive to aversive consequences, or that have experienced trauma in the past.
Why it works ā¦
The principles of ABA work across animals and people. Making the process more effective is the use of Unconditioned Reinforcers, which are reinforcers that do not need to be trained to be reinforcing. Their value comes from being essential to survival, such as food and water. When using URās, you can manipulate their value by focusing on Motivating Operations (MOās). Meaning, you can create Establishing Operations (EOās) by creating an environment that makes the URās more reinforcing, or Abolishing Operations (AOās) that make them less reinforcing. This creates the UR more effective.

Example: Only giving a dog their favorite treat during training sessions/trials.
You can still give them other treats, but only being able to access specific treats during training makes them more reinforcing.

Non-Example: Not feeding the dog to make food more rewarding.
Besides being inhumane and unethical, you risk becoming aversive to your dog and making them aggressive toward you.
Conclusion
PRBT techniques are both a highly effective and humane way to train animals. By rewarding desired behaviors, animals learn to improve their behavior, strengthen their bond with their owners, improve communication, and experience a more humane form of training.
