The Functional Assessment Screening Tool (FAST) is an indirect assessment tool designed to identify the probable functions maintaining maladaptive behaviors. Primarily used during initial assessment screenings, it is to be used as part of a comprehensive functional behavior assessment (FBA), and is not meant to be used by itself. As an indirect assessment, it is a questionnaire interview conducted with people that directly interact with the person being evaluated, and the results should be used to aid in conducting direct assessments/observations that verify behavioral functions and identify relevant factors that may have gone unreported.
The FAST is typically used to help identify possible functions for maladaptive behaviors. This is not a replacement for direct ABC data collections, and should primarily be used for initial assessments. When looking for a copy of the FAST to use, you will see there is more than one form currently in common use. Below are examples, they can be easily found online.
